Office furniture brand HM shortens production cycle with 3D printing

Recently, Stratasys' UK partner and 3D printing company SYS Systems disclosed how they helped Herman Miller, the famous American furniture brand, use its own 3D printing capabilities to accelerate its production process.

It is understood that Herman Miller, known for its office furniture, has installed a Stratasys Fortus 400mc series of 3D printers in its new plant, Portal Mill, Melksham, England. The use of this equipment has greatly reduced their prototype and production process from the original 5-10 days to just one day.

The Fortus 400mc eliminates the need for time-consuming and costly mold steps in manufacturing parts, and enables quick and economical changes to product design at any stage of the design cycle. Fortus is equipped with an extrusion head and gantry to achieve a fairly high positioning accuracy and to reduce part tolerances. Thanks to Stratasys' patented FDM technology, Fortus uses a stable manufacturing-grade thermoplastic to build components, both in terms of accuracy, repeatability and strength due to almost all competitive technologies.

“Now, the days when we have to design around a traditional manufacturing process with a lot of limitations are gone.” Stefan Kogut, head of the Portal Mill R&D workshop, said: “There are many prototypes that benefit from it. One of the parts is the backrest of the office chair. Although the backrest is a large piece of nylon, we used the Fortus 400mc to easily print out its 3D."

It is understood that this 3D printer is not only very useful in generating robust prototypes that function similarly to the final product, but has also proven to be very good at making molds and test parts.

“Our development cycle is usually no less than two years,” added Nick Savage, director of research design and development at EMEA. “From the beginning of ideas and ideas to the final manufacturing, we have been trying to shorten the cycle.” This is also the advantage of 3D printing. In the test lab, we can now model, build and test in a very short time."

Herman Miller says it is looking forward to further pushing the boundaries of design innovation with this new Fortus 3D printing device. The company's unique office chairs and furniture are manufactured and assembled in UK factories, but can be seen in offices and homes around the world, and even museums permanently store them.
