Introducing the Usage of Compound Font Editor in PageMaker

In PageMaker, we often need to arrange some documents that are mixed in Chinese and Western languages. Since PageMaker is producing publications rather than ordinary documents, it is inevitable that the fonts in the documents have higher requirements. At this time, there is a problem: All Chinese are used. Fonts, Western languages ​​in some fonts are not really good-looking, and even a small number of artistic fonts are not even in Western; all use Western fonts are even worse, the Chinese part has become garbled. How to do? To set them separately, the document is long, that is not exhausted. In fact, in the Chinese version of PageMaker there is a special tool "Composite Font Editor", which can help us to solve this problem very conveniently.

The composite font editor is located in the PageMaker plug-in under the Utilities menu. If it is not displayed or grayed out, you need to re-run the installer and check the "Utility - PageMaker Plug-in" Composite font editor can be installed.

After the run, the composite font editor window appears. As shown in Figure 1, the defined font is displayed in the left list, which can be edited or deleted. Click the “Add” button to create a new compound font and create a new composite. The dialog of the font is shown in Figure 2. The meanings of the several main setting columns are:

Font Set Name: The name of the new composite font. For example, type "Zhang Jie's Body Font."

Basic font: Chinese font. Click the downward triangle button to select Chinese fonts from the system font set.

Roman font: Western font.

Size, Baseline: The size and position of the western font display are expressed as a percentage. Sometimes when the same font size is used, the size of the western font is slightly smaller. You can set it to a slightly larger size, such as 120%, and vice versa. Correspondingly, the baseline should be appropriately adjusted after the size changes.

Detailed data setting: further setting the commonly used fonts, sub-common fonts and symbols of a font, the dialog box shown in Figure 3, select the font can be selected from the drop-down item in the range column, can also be Character area directly type the starting area. Note that the detailed information is selected from top to bottom, with the first set value being preferred.

Example: Instant preview of the currently edited composite font. The previous "Adobe" is the western font, followed by the Chinese font, click the "change example" button to define the sample content yourself.

It should be noted that the size and baseline settings cannot be reflected in the examples. Here is a small trick to click the text tool button (T button) in the toolbox before editing the composite font to enter the text editing status. After selecting a section of Chinese and Western mixed text, and then running the composite font editor, after setting the font set, click the "Save" button in the composite font editor window, you can see the font in the text has changed accordingly. If you are not satisfied with the results, including size, baseline, etc., click the "Edit" button to modify the composite font.

Using composite fonts is no different from other fonts in the system. From "Text-Font" we can see that the composite font "Zhang Jie's body font" just edited is also included. However, in previous versions prior to 6.0 it was necessary to restart PageMaker to see them in Fonts.
