The Status Quo and Development of Fine Chemicals for Pulp and Paper Industry

1 Overview The paper industry is a chemical processing industry that uses fibers as raw materials. In the entire process of pulping, bleaching, pulping, papermaking and post-processing, all applications of various chemicals are inseparable. Fine chemicals used in papermaking are those chemical additives that are small, but often critical, and do not include the usual bulk quantities of caustic soda, sulfides, liquid chlorine, talc, kaolin, etc. The addition of these fine chemicals accounts for about 1% to 3% of the total paper, but it has a decisive effect on the economics of paper and production. It can optimize the production process, improve the speed of paper, and enable thinner fiber materials to produce thinner, whiter, and stronger papers. It not only has high economic benefits, but also has the advantage of greatly improving environmental pollution. All countries in the world attach great importance to the research and development of fine chemicals for papermaking.
However, the domestic fine chemicals industry for papermaking is still very young. Although some of the major varieties are produced, the scale is not large. Many green products that are suitable for high-speed paper machines and strict environmental protection requirements are still under development. Due to the lack of development funding, the pace of development is far from meeting the needs. Relatively expensive foreign products, paper mills can not afford, this situation affects and restricts the development of China's paper industry to a certain extent, so that the quality of paper and paperboard in China compared with foreign countries there is a big gap. 2 Current situation of China's fine chemicals for papermaking 2.1 Major varieties The main varieties of papermaking fine chemicals commonly used in domestic paper mills are classified into four categories according to their use in the papermaking process:
1. Pulping chemicals (1) cooking aids - hydrazine.
(2) Waste paper deinking agent - compounded by a variety of surfactants.
2. Papermaking process additives (1) Retention agents - cationic starch, polyacrylamide, anionic starch; multiple retention system.
(2) Defoamers - silicone type, polyether type, or fatty amide type surfactants.
(3) Preservatives - organic sulfur, organic halides.
(4) Flocculants - polyaluminum chloride, sodium polyacrylate, polyacrylamide and modified products thereof.
(5) resin barrier control agent - cationic polyamide.
(6) Fibrous Dispersant - Polyethylene oxide.
3. Functional Additives (1) Internal sizing agent - for acidic papermaking (pH 7): AKD, neutral rosin, SR.
(2) Dry enhancer - cationic starch, polyacrylamide, amphoteric starch, multi-modified starch.
(3) Wet enhancer - melamine formaldehyde resin, polyamide epichlorohydrin resin.
(4) surface sizing agent - polyvinyl alcohol, oxidized starch, cationic starch, styrene - maleic anhydride copolymer.
4. Chemicals for coated paper (1) Coated adhesives (adhesives) - carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber, starch phosphate ester, vinegar-propylene copolymer emulsion, benzene-propylene copolymer emulsion.
(2) Printability improvers - cationic or amphoteric water-soluble polymers.
(3) Pigment dispersant - sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium polyacrylate, copolymer of sodium acrylate and acrylamide.
(4) Lubricant - calcium stearate dispersion (emulsion).
(5) Water-repellent agent - low-formaldehyde melamine urea-formaldehyde resin, modified melamine resin.
(6) Defoamers - polyethers, amides.
