How to use compound fonts in InDesign CS?

The so-called compound font is to set up a composite font composed of specific Chinese fonts, punctuation, symbols, and specific English fonts and numbers. When you select a few pages or the entire book text to apply the compound font you set, all Chinese and English text in the text will be displayed separately according to the font you set. When you need to modify or re-enter the text, it is still displayed according to the setting of the compound font. This allows editors to easily handle large amounts of mixed Chinese and English text.

In previous versions of InDesign, compound fonts were almost unusable. Even if you set a composite font, it still cannot be displayed normally. Through a large number of modifications to the composite fonts of InDesign CS, it is now possible to easily use composite fonts.

To set a composite font correctly, please follow the steps below:

In the text menu, select the composite font ... option, in the composite font options dialog box, you can see the six options of Chinese, Japanese, punctuation, symbols, English and English numbers in the font selection box, and we need to set Is mainly Chinese, punctuation and symbols (note: these three items must be set in a unified font), English and English numbers can be freely set according to preferences.

One, custom composite font

â‘´ Select the "New ..." button and type English characters in the name field (because the font menu does not yet support Chinese names)

⑵ First select the Chinese column in the font box and select the "Custom Font ..." button. Click the "New ..." button in the custom font editor.

(3) Type the word "Chinese" in the name field of the New Font Set dialog box (Note: You must use this name to replace the Chinese option in the font selection box to select another Chinese font in the font table).

â‘· In the custom font editor, you can choose a Founder or Hanyi font. In the Add Character box, you can also type some text to watch its glyph. Then click Save and OK, and the Chinese font is set.

⑸ After setting the Chinese font, you must set punctuation and symbols in the same way. At the same time, the font set for punctuation and symbols must be the same as the font set in Chinese. In addition, when setting punctuation and symbols, you also need to base the custom font set on the punctuation and symbol options. In this way, the unity of text, punctuation and symbols can be maintained in the text entered in the future.

Second, change the composite font

After you set the custom composite font, you can still reset the Chinese font used. You only need to select the item you want to change and select another Chinese font in the pop-up font menu below. (Note: Only in the newly created custom composite font set can other system fonts be selected, otherwise only nine Japanese fonts will be displayed in the pop-up font menu)

3. Select the compound font in the font menu

After completing all the settings, a font name named ATC-414243 is generated in the font menu, which is the code name that Unicode interprets for ABC. We deeply feel the inadequacy of this point, and it also causes inconvenience to users.
