UOT prints complex vascular tissue using a custom bio 3D printer

Recently, the University of Toronto (UOT) researchers have developed a low-cost 3D bio-printer capable of building complex vascular tissue.

Through this custom bioprinter, UOT researchers conducted a study to address the problems in tissue engineering stemming from the poor development of the vascular system, the arrangement of blood vessels in organs or body parts.

The researchers used repeated experiments with gelatin and pluronic F-127 (PF127) materials (a thermogel polymer) to determine that PF127 is the highest quality material for developing vascularized tissue. According to the research report, this discovery "may help accelerate the widespread use of bio 3D printing to solve problems in tissue engineering."

This research helps achieve the goal of scientists working in regenerative medicine: creating functional 3D printed organs.

Branch vascular access and bioprinting

It is well known that vascular access is very important for human anatomy because they contain the vascular system, and then the blood supplies blood to our organs through the tissue and eventually to the entire body. These complex channels are difficult to replicate using current tissue engineering methods, however, bio 3D printing can be easily done, branching and interconnecting within a single configuration.

In addition, it is worth mentioning that hydrogels (a kind of polymer biomaterial) materials, hydrogels play an indispensable role in this research, because their hydrophilic ability enables them to be accommodated in 3D networks. A large amount of water allows cells to grow and contribute to the formation of vascular channels.

Due to the structural similarity of PF127 material to the cell's natural extracellular matrix (ECM), such biomaterials are currently used frequently in bio 3D printing experiments.

Test gelatin and PF127

In the experiment, UOT researchers used their custom 3D bio-printer, for $ 3,000, the hydrogel structure gelatin and PF127 printed material into the desired vascular pattern. The study then concluded that: "We found that filaments produced by Pluronic F-127 have higher spatial resolution, higher uniformity and greater modulus of elasticity than gelatin filaments, especially for design comparisons.
