According to reports, separate 3D scanning and 3D printing equipment may soon become a thing of the past. Inventor Hsin-TsungYeh has obtained a patent for a joint device that combines 3D scanning and 3D printing. In November 2014, Yeh filed a patent application for the device and published it online on May 16 this year. According to Yeh, the reason for developing this seamless 3D scanning-printing device is to simplify the existing operation steps from 3D scanning to 3D printing and reduce costs. The device basically consists of a platform, a processor, a reflection module, a projector and a 3D printing module. This unnamed device looks very integrated. The user first places the object on a closed platform, which is electrically connected to the processor and then to the reflection module, projector and 3D printing module. The reflection module effectively switches between two possible positions. First, the projector projects structured light onto the object, thereby generating 3D spatial information. Subsequently, the processor receives this information and converts it into 3D printing information. When the reflection module is subsequently fixed in the second position, the projector projects a "cutting layer image" based on the generated 3D printing information; the reflecting module reflects this cutting layer image to the 3D printing module, thereby accurately displaying the to-be-printed content. Although there is still a long way to go from obtaining a patent to actually selling this scanning and printing device, everyone is optimistic about the future of this "game changer" device.
